In my honest opinion, I don't think one bit that Yoshimitsu Banno in any way ruined the Godzilla franchise. Yes, he did create one of the biggest "jump the shark" moments in cinema history with the flying Godzilla in GODZILLA VS HEDORA, or GODZILLA VS THE SMOG MONSTER, which was the first version of it I saw when I was a wee one. However, I have in in the number 3 spot of my ranking of the Toho movies. Mr Banno gets too much of a bum rap for what is an excellent movie. As far as the legendary MonsterVerse, I think they're all really good. They're true to the spirit of Godzilla, while still making it it's own thing. I do consider the Legendary Godzilla is the best looking Godzilla ever depicted on screen. And, lived his roar in the 2014 the best.

One of the pieces of my on-going Godzilla collection is a plush Baby Godzilla. It is my favorite and watches all the movies with me. I am be going on 62 years old this year, but I love Godzilla and actively collect what I can afford. You would love him! I think.

I'm so glad that the Japanese effects houses, at least some of them, have really found their footing with the CGI Godzillas by the time of SHIN GODZILLA and GODZILLA MINUS ONE. They're putting most American effects houses, except for ILM, who have always been on top of their game.

  • @drhacknslashzombietimelord6768

This movie was made for 130-250 million dollars, and the effects were subpar. One of the most annoying things was that Zilla's size was inconsistent, and he'd change size from scene to scene. Not to mention the CGI was not very good on Zilla. SHIN GODZILLA was made for roughly 11 million dollars, and GODZILLA MINUS ONE was made for 12-15 million, and Godzilla in each of those movies looked flawlessly photo real. I actually thought they were animatronics for the most part. Granted, Zilla did look better than the Octalus from DEEP RISING, which looked awful, but he still looked pretty bad. Maybe some of these big effects studios should start taking lessons from the Japanese effects houses.

I liked this movie much better than _Ebirah_ or _Son of Godzilla._ It had a tight story with a good message about believing in yourself and standing up to bullies. Plus you get the best parts of those other movies (the monster action, of course) without having to suffer through them, in addition to some new monster-fu. It's far from my favorite, but it's a decent entry.

I really liked this one when I was younger. Yeah it's schlock -- especially the prodigious use of the nighttime filter -- but its blatancy made it easy to dismiss the ridiculous parts. I just shrugged and went with it. Viewed this way, it was a fun romp, with what felt like a good amount of giant monster action. Megalon is a good addition to the rogues gallery. Gigan is cool. Jett Jaguar had a unique look for the Godzilla series (I wasn't, and still am not, familiar with the giant robot Japanese shows/movies from that time). And this, for me, is the definitive classic Godzilla costume.

With my dad it was the opposite. We sought out Godzilla 2000 when it came out and we loved it for what it was, a Japanese style kaiju beat em up with acceptable cgi enhancements.

Clearly they werent being creative enough with that excuse about Jet Jaguar. Either a. Have the Gotengo transform into Jet Jaguar; or b. Have the protag guy be a cyborg or android instead of whatever a "kaiser" is and have him be a new incarceration of the character. On another note, in universe, I don't really understand how they have monster toys. It would be like 21st century kids having Osama Bin Laden or Vladamir Putin action figures.

I had seen a few movies of Godzilla before the US version was announced and thought they were good fun, I had the Imperial Godzilla toy as well, but it was the announcement and hype surrounding this film that really made me a fan. My dad loved these movies and with a new Godzilla on the way, he would bring home all these Godzilla tapes from the local video store. I was hooked and wanted more. I couldn't wait for 1998 to get here, I loved the big billboards tell us his foot was larger than this bus or the taco bell dog with his box trying to catch Zilla and anticipating what he would look like. We didn't go to the movies often, but when we did it was an event. We went to see Godzilla opening weekend and we loved it, perhaps a lil disappointed, but it was a fun movie. It wouldn't be until many re watches that I was able to pin an answer onto what disappointed me and like you, as soon as Zilla nearly kills Animal and walks away, the movie goes from "WOW is this great!" To "What are they doing?" real quick. I'll still carry the memories of that brief 6 month period when we all thought Godzilla was going to be the next Batman 1989 or Jurassic Park.

It's the human, real-world scenes in this movie that I love: the shots of industrial Kawasaki,, the drab apartment interiors. The mysterious toymaker, the hard-working parents, the earnest messaging about latch-key kids. And of course the boy Ichiro himself: come on, folks, he's delightful! And he's a more realistic child-lead than any of his counterparts in "Home Alone" or dozens of other American movies. One moment (among many) of thoughtful script-writing: when the toy-maker tries to interest Ichiro in the Apollo moon landing, Ichiro is totally disinterested. (He only cares about Monster Island.) The film is saying, why do we adults so often get kids wrong? On the other hand, I'm bored stiff by the monster-fight scenes. The scenes with Ichiro outsmarting the bumbling criminals go on longer than they need to. I could also have done without the slapstick ending where the sign painter falls and gets covered in paint (but at least Ichiro takes the high road by apologizing). And the film could have done something more with the character Sachiko, Ichiro's devoted friend. "All Monsters Attack" is certainly flawed, but it's an evocative, warm, and loving little film. I'm not at all surprised that Ishiro Honda considered it a favorite. PS, about the theme song: I believe it's the Godzilla franchise making fun of itself and its own clichés. It's delightfully hilarious!

I started a binge watch of Godzilla films and all things closely related such as Mothra films and Rodan, War of the Gargantuas, etc. Between each I watched your history of each film because I love knowing stuff and I’m a compulsive completionist. I watched every minute of your History of Godzilla 2014 (longer than the actual movie!). I really appreciate all the effort you’ve put into these and I’m subscribed now because I’m looking forward to the rest. Great work and thank you. Once I’m finished with all the films I will do a write up of Godzilla films as a whole. I’m not sure yet as to the unique angle I’ll come from but your videos have been resoundingly influential on my turning mental gears. You rock!

Saw this movie in the theater. By that second tease (1:53:09), the audience was noticeably irritated, with audible groans, boos, and one person nearby saying somewhat loudly, "This is bullshit!" -- a sentiment I still share. The budget was probably blown by the time of prescreenings (if they had any) and so it was too late to do anything about it. I also agree that train scene was contrived and a waste of time. Overall I liked it, but was disappointed. It was a modern take on a typical classic Godzilla movie: generally middling acting with uninteresting characters & human plot, and not enough monster battles. However, I _really_ liked the concept of envisioning the monsters as realistic animals that are part of the natural world, with an organization tasked to study them, so that we can learn to coexist.

I was 100% expecting the little info card from the history videos to show up when you pointed out the casting. Honestly, for me, the hardest part of the problem would be: how does the kid handle the switch? Maybe the parents are okay with it, but how will it effect both children, and how will that in turn effect the parents? I truly don't know how to answer. Tell your dad Happy Father's Day. Hyped for Shin Godzilla.
